General X-ray
About the Procedure
An X-ray is a photograph taken with radiation of the same nature as light rays but of extremely short wavelength. The X-ray is able to penetrate through body structures and organs of various thicknesses to produce an image on X-ray film. Medical X-rays show organs, bones, joints and muscles in the body.
Preparation
No preparations are necessary.
During the Procedure
A radiological technologist will position the part of the body to be filmed. Several views might be taken. You will be asked to be very still while the pictures are taken.
After the Procedure
There are no restrictions.
Follow-up
In emergencies, X-rays are read and the results are given to the emergency physician as soon as possible. Non-urgent films are interpreted and the results are reported to your physician within 24 hours.
