Sclerotherapy
About the Procedure
Sclerotherapy is a technique used to treat spider veins and small varicose veins. Chemicals are injected into these diseased veins, causing them to close and eventually disappear. This procedure can be quickly and easily performed on an outpatient basis at our clinic locations without the need for anesthesia.
Preparation
On the day of your procedure, please do not use skin lotions or creams on your legs.
During the Procedure
The CRL VeinClinic physician will use small, fine needles to place the “sclerosing” agent into the varicose or spider veins being treated. The physician may perform a few test injections to gauge your specific response to the chemicals. The volume of the chemical agent injected may then be adjusted to ensure optimal treatment of your diseased veins. While most people experience very little or no pain during the procedure, some may notice very minimal tingling, stinging or burning sensations.
After the Procedure
Compression stockings and bandages should be worn as directed by your provider. You may immediately return to normal activities following your procedure. However, hot environments, such as hot baths and saunas should be avoided. Walking is encouraged. Some bruising may be noticed following the procedure, but this is usually not severe.
Treatment results may be seen within a few days, but it may take up to 12 weeks for treated veins to be completely reabsorbed by the body and disappear.
Follow-up
While many veins can be treated during a single treatment session, additional visits may be needed to treat all of your spider or varicose veins. It is also possible that certain veins may require additional injections or other interventions for complete removal.
