What Can Patients Expect?

For most patients, the experience is very similar to a traditional mammogram. Before imaging begins, a technologist places a small IV, typically in the arm, to administer the contrast agent. Once the contrast has been given, mammographic images are taken using specialized imaging technology.

The exam is performed by an experienced breast imaging team, and most patients can return to their normal daily activities immediately afterward. Patients scheduled for a Contrast-Enhanced Mammogram will receive instructions before their appointment and will have the opportunity to discuss any questions with their healthcare team.

Is Contrast-Enhanced Mammography Right for Everyone?

While Contrast-Enhanced Mammography is an exciting advancement, it is not intended to replace routine screening mammography or become the standard exam for every patient.

Breast imaging recommendations are highly individualized and depend on factors such as a patient’s medical history, breast density, symptoms, and specific clinical circumstances. CEM is most often recommended when a physician believes additional information may be beneficial, including after a mammogram or ultrasound, for women with dense breasts, or in situations where advanced breast imaging is needed.
